Éste julio fue nuestra primera vez en Barcelona celebrando el maravilloso mes del PRIDE. Trabajamos con ACATHI para promover y mostrarle al mundo ésta organización.

Un poco sobre nosotras:
Yo soy Natanya, una estudiante de psicología en la Universidad de California, Davis. Yo quería trabajar con ACATHI porque estaba inspirada por su misión y dedicación a la promoción de los derechos de migrantes y refugiados LGBTIQ+ del todo el mundo. Fue mi meta aprender cómo funciona una ONG en maneras de asesoramiento al igual que el trabajo legal y social. Esperé poder involucrarme en el proceso de acogida y apoyo para individuos diversos. En el futuro, aspiro a usar la psicología y las políticas públicas para crear una sociedad más inclusiva y equitativa, una en la que haya consideración sobre las necesidades de comunidades marginalizadas o sin apoyo.
Yo soy Sofía, una estudiante de ciencias políticas en la Universidad de Montreal. Me interesan los derechos humanos y la inmigración. Acathi fue la organización que me proveyó la oportunidad perfecta para labrar mi futuro en el campo profesional. Trabajar con inmigrantes y refugiados de la comunidad LGBTIQ me ha ampliado mis horizontes y perspectivas hacia nuevas culturas y formas de vida.
Mi experiencia no sólo ha sido enriquecedora desde el punto de vista cultural, sino que también he aprendido mucho sobre política exterior y los derechos en la Unión Europea. Acathi es una familia donde cada uno crece mucho y donde hay que enfrentarse a las realidades a veces bellas pero también difíciles de hoy en día. Trabajar en una ONG es una experiencia única que aconsejo a cualquier persona.
Nuestra primera semana empezó con una experiencia honorable. El 28 de junio, tuvimos la oportunidad asombrosa de asistir a la inauguración del mes de PRIDE en el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Allí conocimos al alcalde y su equipo, también descubrimos el gran impacto de ACATHI y su dedicación desde hace ya 22 años en la ciudad. Quedamos impactadas al ver la huella que la organización ha dejado en la comunidad.
Desde entonces, tuvimos varias oportunidades para conocer a los integrantes de ACATHI. A través de los eventos “Ocio” cada viernes, donde fomentamos la comunidad y la amistad. También participamos en los puestos para reunir a la comunidad con ACATHI por medio de la educación, sensibilización, y la diversión.
Al final, participamos en el desfile de PRIDE, el highlight del mes.
Rodeado por música, baile, y una energía inolvidable, no dudamos que ACATHI es una organización líder en la defensa de los derechos LGBTIQ en Barcelona. Durante la manifestación del 20 de Julio, caminamos desde la Gran Vía hacia el Arc de Triomf celebrando ACATHI. Había una comunidad diversa bailando, riendo y uniéndose. Nos sentimos empoderadas y emocionadas al caminar por esas calles con la gente animándonos y, a veces, rozándonos con pistolas de agua. ¡Qué momento para estar en Barcelona!
Okay, ahora, es la hora para reflexiones finales.
Sofía, tienes algo que quisieras añadir?:
Quiero agradecer a este lugar que me ha hecho aprender tanto sobre las luchas por las que pasan los inmigrantes y las comunidades marginadas que el mundo ve pero elige no ver. Mi percepción de la comunidad LGBT ha cambiado. La comunidad me ha acogido aquí y me ha mostrado otra forma de vida, incitando a cuestionar mis propios prejuicios sobre algo con lo que al principio no me sentía identificada. Acathi es más que una organización, es un hogar, un lugar que acoge a cualquier persona sin importar su raza o su pasado un crisol de culturas.
Y Natanya, ¿qué tal tú?:
Me siento muy afortunada de poder observar el importante trabajo de ACATHI, conectar con la comunidad, y ser parte de un ambiente muy acogedor y dedicado. He conocido a tantas personas diferentes, cada cual con historias y antecedentes únicos. He tenido la oportunidad de compartir un entorno con personas increíbles y he aprendido mucho sobre sus luchas y su resiliencia. Fue una experiencia inestimable para aprender cómo involucrar a la comunidad sobre el tema de Pride.

[English] Reflections on our First Pride in Barcelona!
Our names are Natanya Kharat and Sofía Poida, and we are interns doing an exchange from California and Oregon respectively!
This July, we celebrated our first PRIDE month in Barcelona, an unforgettable experience. We worked with ACATHI to promote and share the organization’s mission with the world, and what a time it was!
To start, a little about us:
I’m Natanya, a psychology major at the University of California, Davis. I chose to work with ACATHI because I was inspired by their mission and dedication to promoting LGBTQ+ migrant and refugee rights from around the world. My goal was to learn how an NGO like ACATHI operated in terms of counseling, legal, and social work, and to become involved in the process of welcoming and providing support to diverse individuals. In the future, I aspire to use psychology and public policy to create a more equitable society that considers the needs of marginalized communities.
And I’m Sofía, a political science student at the University of Montreal. I’m passionate about human rights and immigration, and working with this organization has been the perfect opportunity to shape my future career path. Engaging with LGBTQ+ migrants and refugees has exposed me to the world. My experience has not only been culturally enriching but has additionally taught me a great deal about foreign policy and European law. ACATHI feels like a family where everyone grows together, facing both the beautiful and challenging realities of today. Working with an NGO is a unique experience that I highly recommend.
Our journey began with a bang. On June 28th, we had the privilege of attending the PRIDE month inauguration at Barcelona’s City Hall, where we met the mayor and his team. There, we learned about ACATHI’s significant impact over its 22-year history and the work they’ve done for the community.
Since then, we’ve had numerous opportunities to connect with those who come to ACATHI, particularly through the weekly “ocio” events every Friday, which foster community and friendship. We also staffed booths during the PRIDE fair to reach out to people and passerby’s through education, awareness, and fun activities. At the end of July, our highlight was participating in Barcelona’s very own PRIDE parade.
Surrounded by music, dancing, and an unforgettable energy, we found it clear how ACATHI is a leading organization–if not a founder–in advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights in Barcelona. On July 20th, we marched from Gran Vía to the Arc de Triomf with ACATHI’s celebratory float and vibrant banner. The streets were filled with colorful and dynamic people, united by dancing and celebrating. We felt empowered to be part of such a lively cause, even getting sprayed with water guns from enthusiastic onlookers. What a time to be in Barcelona!

I want to express my gratitude for this experience, which has taught me so much about the struggles that immigrants and marginalized communities face—struggles that the world often sees but chooses to ignore. My understanding of the LGBT community has deepened, and the warm welcome I received here as someone eager to learn has opened my eyes to different ways of life and challenged my initial perceptions. ACATHI is more than an organization; it’s a home, a place that embraces anyone regardless of their background or past, a true melting pot of cultures.
And Natanya, how about you?:
I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to observe ACATHI’s important work, connect with the community, and be part of such a welcoming and dedicated organization. I’ve got to meet so many different people, each with a unique story and background to tell. This experience has given me the opportunity to communicate with individuals I would never have got to know otherwise, and I got to learn a lot about their struggles and resilience. It was an invaluable experience to learn how to engage the community on the theme of Pride.
